The Winterose Chronicles, Volume 03: My Thoughts on Barry Manilow

I've been listening to Barry again after a long break and I while I like him a lot there are a few things I've noticed about his music that bother me. Since I know that you all are alert music listeners and would love to hear my insights I thought I'd write them down so it would be out in the open.

Something that kinda bugs me about Barry Manilow is that in his song "Mandy", he says "Caught up in a world of uphill climbing, The tears are in my mind and nothing is rhyming" Well it does! It's bothersome to me that he sings about things NOT rhyming, but it appears to me that he wrote that just so it WOULD rhyme!

AND in Copacabana, (a stirring song about a young girl named Lola whose world is shattered even though she is fashionably dressed), the girls in the background sing "Have a banana" 3 minutes and three seconds into the song. How are we supposed to take him seriously as an artist when he screws around with us like that?! I mean HONESTLY!

I'll never be able to watch Bandstand without thinking that he likes his girl but he "loves American Bandstand". So he'd rather dance than hang with his girl?! The man is clearly gay!

He does have a nice anthem for people who have had their arm fall asleep while watching a movie. (You know how it does that when you're on a date?) "The feeling is gone and I must get it back right away before she sees." How telling is that? He speaks to every embarrassment you feel when you have to move your arm with your OTHER arm, and then it just dangles there when you walk and sometimes it's so bad that you have to kind of cradle it. He's looked "high, low everywhere I possibly can, but there's no trying to get the feeling again." That's right baby, that limb is gone for good. You ain't gonna find it.
