"Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." -Elizabeth Stone
"Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother." -Oprah Winfrey
These quotes are two of my personal favorite regarding motherhood, from two completely different points of view. The first quote perfectly describes the feeling of giving birth to a child and knowing the heartbreak of not being able to protect his every move out in a scary world. And the second quote points out that one need not give birth to a child in order to be his or her mother... or woman of influence and unconditional love in their life.
Mother's Day should be a celebration of the divine nature of womenhood in general. Even for women who are unable to have or have not yet brought children into the world, you still play the important (and even critical) role of nurturer in the lives of the children in our families, neighborhoods, and friendships.
Mother's Day is also a day to reflect on and celebrate the women who have been there for us in our own lives.
