Gingerbread Houses

Every year our family makes gingerbread houses on the first Saturday of December. It started when I was a pre-teen and has grown through the years. We often invite all the friends and family we can and even have a little recipe and stencil to give them.
We ask is that people bring their own gingerbread. Now days you can just buy a pre-made kit at the store, and sometimes people just show up with graham crackers. We also have attendees bring a bag of powdered sugar for the icing and any candy they might want to add to our overflowing table.
It is such a fun time to see what everyone creates and to watch the little ones help parents with the decorating. We have seen many new and fun ideas. On year we had a pyramid, and another a full castle with a moat.
To add challenge to the day the family has even created little rules over the years. No colored icing and everything must be edible are two favorites that have prevailed through the years.
Throughout the year whenever we see a unique candy or get an idea we talk about the gingerbread houses we'll all make. It's really brought our family together around the holidays.
