Family Fun

Having a reserved Family Night each and every week sends a clear message to your children that family is top priority. Set it for the same evening and time each week. Clear the schedule for that night. Make sure homework is completed and forward your phone calls to the machine.

Keeping it just to your immediate family members strengthens your bonds to one another. It fosters communication and teaches each member how to get along. Having fun with your family will create long-term good memories for everyone!

Allow your children to help in the planning process. Assign someone to be in charge. Doing this will get your children excited to be involved. For example, if your daughter is "in charge" of game night, she can pick the game. If your son is "in charge" of movie night, he can choose the movie. Remember: If they create, they will participate!

Family Night is the perfect opportunity to teach your children social skills and any other message you would like to teach. You can give lessons (either by sneaking them into conversation or by addressing it up front) on etiquette, turn-taking, and being a good sport.
