Christmas Carols and Christmas Songs

christmas carolers

The line of distinction between a Christmas carol and a holiday song is a bit blurred by several definitions.

Some would say that unless it has a fast beat, it is a song, not a carol. Wikipedia.org says: "It is difficult to draw a distinction between a Christmas carol and a Christmas song. For something to be sung by a church choir, or sung in the street by amateurs, the song would have to have a fairly rapid regular beat, which would therefore exclude a meandering crooning song such as White Christmas."

Meanwhile, The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines a carol as a "religious song...associated with Christmas", referring to the content of lyrics instead of the tempo.

Either way, Christmas carols and Christmas songs are an important part of celebrating Christmas, especially as it passes down important traditions as many of these songs date all the way to the 17th century and older! The religious carols strengthen our knowledge and appreciation for the birth of Christ, who after all, is "the reason for the season".

We have collected several songs and carols for you to use either with your family, to go caroling with, etc.! We put each one on its own page to make it more user friendly.
