Buttermilk Sugar Cookies

The buttermilk in this recipe makes these cookies extra soft and fluffy! This has been my favorite cookie recipe for as long as I can remember. I make them EVERY year.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups sugar
4 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 cup shortening
3 well-beaten eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk

Directions:

Cream sugar and shortening together. Add eggs and vanilla. Sift flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and add buttermilk.

Refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight.

Add 1 cup flour (don't sift) to chilled dough before rolling out. Continue to add flour until not too sticky to roll. Roll out and cut into desired shapes. Bake at 325 degrees for 6-8 minutes. Yield: 60 cookies

Frosting:

Ingredients:

1 lb. bag powdered sugar
1 cube butter (1/2 cup)
milk to consistency
1-2 tsp. almond flavoring
food coloring

Directions:

Mix together and frost cookies.
