At-Home Day Spa

Get ready for an at-home spa day! Use this formula the day of a special event, date, or holiday party, and you will look your radiant best! OR, you can do it when you need a pick-me-up! No need to buy expensive products; all of our ingredients are likely to be found within your pantry.

Do note that this protocol takes a few hours to complete from start to finish. Allow yourself plenty of time to get ready. We recommend doing a practice run of the at-home spa protocol at least a week before your special occasion to make sure all of the ingredients work well for your skin and to get down the routine of how to do the protocol on the big day!

Ingredients needed:

Aromatherapy (Recommended, but not mandatory)
Olive oil
Saran wrap
Dried rosemary leaves (Found in the spice aisle)
Ground oats (You can use a food processor or a coffee grinder to grind oatmeal.)
Granulated sugar
Brown sugar
Almond oil (Olive oil may be substituted in recipes, if needed, but almond smells good!)
Vanilla extract
Nutmeg
1 egg
Honey
1 lemon (You will be using the juice and the outer rind to create zest.)
Avocado (optional)
Plain yogurt (optional)
Sea Salt
2 Green Tea teabags
Small bowl of ice water

Advance preparation:

Make sure you do not shave your legs for at least three days before doing this protocol. The salt glow will sting if you do shave right before it!

The day before, prepare all three of our at-home spa recipes (see below) and place in an airtight containers. Set aside for tomorrow.

Treat blemishes the night before. If you have a blemish the night before and you need quick results, put just a dab of toothpaste onto the pimple and sleep in it overnight.

Prepare your bathroom. Thoroughly clean your bathroom and de-clutter the counter. Having a clean bathroom will make your experience extra special! Place candles around your tub (be sure to make sure you have a lighter handy!), place aromatherapy of choice nearby, as well as a pumice stone, cuticle pusher and your favorite razor for shaving, and get your favorite music cued up. Check out our bath time recommendations for further suggestions.

Start the day right. Getting plenty of sleep the night before will give your eyes sparkle and your skin a good healthy color.

Take a half hour to do some sort of exercise. Even a brisk walk around the neighborhood will do wonders for your complexion. Not only is exercise an immediate mood booster, you will have a healthy pink glow to your skin and increased energy to be your most alert self.

Choose healthy foods to eat this day. Eating well will make you feel good on the inside, and that in turn radiates to the outside. Be sure to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. As general rule, for great skin, avoid soda pop, coffee, and other sugary drinks. All dehydrate the skin, causing you to look older than you are.

Now, time for your at-home spa day to begin!

  1. Go ahead and put on a bathrobe, you're going to want to be able to slip out of your clothes quickly during this process.

  2. Deep condition your hair with a hot oil treatment.
    Hot Oil Deep Conditioner:

1/2 - 1 cup olive oil, depending on your length of hair.

Heat olive oil in a saucepan until warm. Don't let it get too hot! Slowly drizzle into your hair, thoroughly coating it. If you have long hair, pull hair up into a bun with an elastic or hair clip. Immediately cover with plastic wrap and just forget it!

  3. Cleanse your face with a gentle face wash of your choice. Never use soap on your facial skin!

  4. Steam your skin. Bring a pot of water to boil. Add 1 tbsp. rosemary leaves and reduce heat to medium. Draping a towel over your head to direct steam to your face, lean over the pot of water for ten minutes. Be careful not to burn yourself! If it feels too hot, it probably is. Adjust the temperature or distance from the pot according to comfort. Your face doesn't need to be too close to the pot to get the full benefits of steaming.

  5. Gently exfoliate your skin using our delicious Brown Sugar Oatmeal Scrub.

    Brown Sugar Oatmeal Facial Scrub:

    1 1/2 teaspoon ground oats
    1/2 Tablespoon granulated sugar
    1 Tablespoon brown sugar
    1 Tablespoon almond oil
    1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

Mix all ingredients together. Apply to recently-steamed skin, and gently rub in upward circular motions. Avoid the tender skin around the eyes. Spend extra time around places where wrinkles or dry skin appear, near the outer corners of the eyes at the temples, on your nose, chin and forehead. After about three minutes, rinse your skin and gently pat dry with a towel.

  6. Apply a treatment masque. Choose one of the following for dry or oily skin.

Oily Skin OR Normal Skin Facial Masque:

    1 Tablespoon honey
    1 raw egg white
    1 teaspoon ground oats
A few drops of lemon juice
(Note: Eggs are rich in protein and vitamin A. However, for those sensitive to using eggs, substitute 2 Tbsp. ground oats instead.)

Mix together and apply in a thick layer onto your face and neck. Leave on while you complete the rest of your at-home spa day.

    Dry Skin Facial Masque 1:

    1 raw egg yolk
    1 Tablespoon honey, warmed

Mix together and apply in a thick layer onto your face and neck. Leave on while you complete the rest of your at-home spa day.

    Dry Skin Facial Masque 2:

    1/2 ripe avocado, mashed
    1 Tablespoon plain yogurt

Mix together and apply in a thick layer onto your face and neck. Leave on while you complete the rest of your at-home spa day.

  7. Now that you have your hair and facial masque setting, prepare your bathtub. Fill the tub with warm/almost hot (not too hot; too hot water will dry your skin out), light candles, add about 20 drops of your chosen aromatherapy oils, and start the music. Make sure your eye treatment is ready to go as well (see eye treatment below in step 10).

  8. Give yourself a salt glow. Place a towel on the floor for easy clean up.

Use our recipe for a Purifying Lemon Salt Scrub.

    Purifying Lemon Salt Scrub

    2/3 cup sea salt
    1/2 cup almond oil
    1 Tablespoon honey
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest (Use a fresh lemon and either a zesting tool or a fine grater to peel the rind of the fruit to create the zest.)

Being extra careful not to get water in your salt glow scrub, apply salt glow mixture onto your skin and gently massage into skin in circular movements. Concentrate on areas of rough or thick skin such as elbow, knees, arms, and buttocks. Be extra careful around thin-skinned areas such as the breasts. Don't forget to exfoliate your hands and feet using the salt glow!

  9. Once you have finished your salt glow, lie down into the bathtub, and let the water naturally dissolve the salt glow from your body.

  10. Apply eye treatment. Green tea is rich with wonderful anti-oxidants. Using these tea bags on your eyes will reduce puffiness, irritation, and dark circles, giving you radiant, rested eyes!

All you need are two green tea bags placed in a small bowl of ice water.

Remove tea bag from ice water and squeeze out excess water. Place prepared tea bags into a tissue (necessary to prevent staining on your skin), and then place over each eye. As they lose their chill, simply refresh them by dipping back into the bowl and repeating.

  11. Soak in the bath for a minimum of 20 minutes, turning if needed. While in the tub, push back your cuticles on your fingernails and toenails with the cuticle pusher. Use the pumice stone to buff any rough spots on the bottoms of your feet.

  12. Once you are finished with the bath, shave your legs and underarms using the bath water to rinse your blade. Shaving after doing the salt glow and bath soak will make your legs feel amazing!!!

  13. Drain the tub. Turn on the shower and remove the plastic wrap from your head. Rinse the masque off your face with just water. Shampoo your hair twice to ensure that all of the olive oil has been rinsed out. Do not apply conditioner, as it will make it limp; your hair is now plenty conditioned!

  14. Now it is time to get dressed for your big night. Don't forget to moisturize your body and apply the appropriate facial moisturizer to your face. Applying moisturizer helps your makeup last longer! Style your hair and apply makeup.
Now be prepared to wow your friends and family!
