About The Hip Homemaker

Hello, my name is Laurie Cromie. Welcome to my site, The Hip Homemaker!

Creating The Hip Homemaker has been such a joy for me. It allows me to do what I've always wanted to ultimately do: be a stay at home mom, but still pursue my passions. I love to learn new things, especially around the home, and even more, I love being able to pass that information on to others. All from the comfort of my own home. The best part is, I do it in my spare time, making my own hours!

french toastMy parents did me a huge favor as a small child by patiently teaching me the basics on cleaning, cooking, and keeping a nice home. I still remember my dad teaching me my first official recipe: French Toast. I'm sure my mother cringes to think of all of the experimental recipes I've made over the years. But I kept with it, always baking and cooking for my family.

I was a self-taught crocheter and knitter at a very young age. I always relied on books from the library to learn a new trick or technique. What an age we live in where we now have all of this knittinginformation at the touch of our fingertips on the internet!

Nowadays, my husband loves that part of me. Thanks to this website, he gets to reap the rewards of his wife baking and tweaking her recipes, then using him as the guinea pig to taste test everything.

In my single life, I worked in a few different day spas doing massage therapy and esthetics. I received my professional massage therapist license in 1998 and my esthetician license in 2002. During the time in-between obtaining those licenses, I was a student at the University of Utah studying Biology, just as many in my family had done. But my main interests were in the spa industry and I eventually decided to focus on furthering my beach spacareer with the spa I was employed with. Eventually, I was promoted to Spa Director and I also became a spa coach for Aveda, teaching other massage therapists and estheticians in the field. My training with Aveda helped me recognize my passion for obtaining information and teaching what I know.

Eventually I took a huge leap of faith and moved to Malibu, CA to work for a spa just off the beach, as their Spa Director, massage therapist, and esthetician. I was pleasantly surprised to obtain a celebrity clientèle that included Jeremy Piven, Pamela Anderson, Linda Thompson, and Andy Tennant.

I met my husband while in Los Angeles. A proud UCLA alumnus, Scott was born and raised in the west Los Angeles area. While at UCLA, Scott was a very active participant in the rally committee, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Cognitive Science. Scott is currently a Principal Business Consultant with a company based out of San Francisco. Scott was a dedicated volunteer for the YMCA's Youth and Government program for over ten years, working as a camp counselor among many other roles.

Our son came into the world in 2006, and he has brought me the greatest joy imaginable. When he was born, I just knew I couldn't bear to go back to work. I wanted to spend every moment with him I could. So here I am, a stay at home mother who writes about what she knows and loves... and super proud to be one!
